ESA CCI MRLC dataset conversion to ORCHIDEE PFTs

1. GENERIC PFTs distributed by K.Harper

2. Köppen-Geiger climate classification

  • The data are taken from http://koeppen-geiger.vu-wien.ac.at/present.htm
  • The original grid of 1/36=0.0277° is resampled to 0.25° by calculating the class fractions
  • Classes are joined into 5 groups following the table shown below
  • Points without data are filled by the dominant class of each latitude

3. C.Still C3/C4 vegetation type partitioning

  • The data are provided by C.Still at 1/6=0.166° for 3 classes:
    • C3 herbaceous cover
    • C4 herbaceous cover
    • C3 tree cover
    where C3_herbaceous_cover + C4_herbaceous_cover + C3_tree_cover = 1
  • C4 fraction is calculated as C4_herbaceous_cover / (C3_herbaceous_cover + C4_herbaceous_cover)
  • The pixels with no C3/C4 data are considered to be pure C3
  • The maps are resampled to 0.25° by calculating the class fractions

4. ESA CCI water bodies product

  • The water bodies product is distributed as a static map at 150 m spatial resolution
  • It has the distinction between ocean and inland water (legend: 0-Ocean, 1-Land, 2-Inland Water)
  • The data are resampled to 0.25° by calculating the class fractions
  • The product is used to generate the masks for distinguishing between different water bodies parts — OCEAN, INLAND and COAST:
    • if class0 > 0.999, the pixel is considered to be OCEAN
    • if around 50km from a pixel there is at least one OCEAN pixel, the pixel is considered to be COAST
    • else the pixel is considered to be INLAND

5. ORCHIDEE PFT maps production

  • The ORCHIDEE PFT maps are produced by combining all the products shown above using the cross-walking table (see below)
  • The resulting fractions below 0.001 are set to zero
  • The final fractions are normalized to have the sum across PFTs equal to one
  • The data are masked where OCEAN=1 or sum(GENERIC)=0
